At 2:50 a.m. on April 11, 2010, Christian, his older brother Lee Martinez, and two of their childhood friends were in a car accident while traveling from Houston to Austin on US Highway 290. The driver, 16-year-old Carlos Rivera, hit a van which was illegally parked on the side of the highway when he fell asleep and drifted off the road. Maricela sits in the waiting room of Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, and talks on the telephone to Jorge Martinez, Christian's 20-year-old brother who was incarcerated at the time of the accident.
