Maricela sits in her office in the Austin Community College (ACC) Highland Business Center on September 26, 2019. After working 16 years as a waitress, Maricela left her job at Captain Benny's to pursue her GED and work as a data processor at ACC. From her window, just 750 yards away, she can almost see the kitschy seafood restaurant where she spent so many long hours. “In all those years at Captain’s," she said, "I never thought I would be working here across the highway at ACC."
